UV Protection Sun Creams and Chemicals - Jacqui, Knaresborough, UK
I spoke to the skin specialist at our local hospital regarding what sun lotion to use on my 8 year old, and she told me to beware that some high UV protection sun creams have so many chemicals in them, that using them may cause a reaction, and that the skin does benefit from some rays ... A sunny tip - John, UK
When you are swimming in chlorinated water, always wear waterproof cream because the chlorine can trigger off eczema. (February 03)
Proderm Sun Mousse - the best I have used - Margaret, Bromsgrove, UK
This is my third year of using proderm sun protection mousse and I cannot believe how good it is. I recommend it to all my friends. The main reason I started to use it was that many years ago Ambre Solar did a sun mousse which I preferred to use. Since they discontinued it I have been searching for a replacement. The replacement (Proderm) is far superior. I have just had a problem with Sainsburys, Redditch, with this product i.e. the date on the bottom was the same as last year MAR 02. My daughter rang your organisation (the distributors Chefaro) and was very impressed with the girls she spoke to. Top marks all round. (June 02)
Sun and sea worked for me - Mark, Blackburn, UK
I've had eczema pretty much all my life, although when I was about 21 it suddenly spread all over me, and even onto my eyelids, which I now believe is quite a common place on the face. I suffered for quite a while at university, and tried, as many other individuals, loads of different things; all to no avail. However, after uni I decided to travel the world. Now on my first day away, I went into the sea and got sun burnt; the salt water really dried my skin out and my eczema patches got burned really badly. But a few days later I noticed that my skin felt and looked a lot better, and I began to realise that both the sun and sea were helping it. However when I got back home in November, almost immediately my skin flared up again and continued to get worse. So I went to the doctors and asked if there was anything that could replicate the sea or its minerals. I was told no, but then stumbled across the dead sea mineral salts on this website. I bought the black soap and used it twice a day in the shower. Now although my skin felt better and smoother, all the redness remained and therefore as far as I was concerned, the soap had been pointless. That was until my mum suggested trying the sun bed to replicate the ultraviolet rays. This I did on Saturday, and I am pleased to say that by Monday my skin has almost completely healed all over, and I've got some colour in my face for once in my life. I'm not sure if this will work for everybody, and I know that sunbeds aren't the best thing in the world; but to be honest I'll take my chance with anything if it means my skin feels and looks like this for ever.
If I can give more advice to anyone, mail me at mtsmith@totalise.co.uk. I can at least tell you how bad my eczema was! (Feb 2002)
UVB Treatment - Marvin, Sun City Center, USA
I started breaking out a little short of 9 months ago - first a couple dime size blotches on my legs and within six months all over my body with exception of hands and face. Was told it was nummular eczema, and I tried every cream ointment and steroid I could get but nothing helped until a month ago. I went to a dermatologist who put me on the following treatment. UVB!!! We call it the light box. It's a cabinet I am enclosed within and receive 1 minute of exposure the first day and adding 15 seconds every treatment for ten treatments over a three week time frame. During the treatment period I keep putting a moisturiser (lubriderm) on my body twice a day as well as an ointment (triamcinolone 0.1%) on the affected areas also twice a day and as of this writing I do not have a spot on my body of the eczema. Will be watching for any future problems and will advise you of same if you wish. But I think we got it!! We'll see.
