Your Stories - Immune System

Update on my daughter - Kim, S Attleboro, USA

I am updating on my daughter Ivy's eczema. We have been fighting this for 2 and a half years, severe eczema. I wrote in a while back about the chicken pox vaccination making her worse and she had not cleared up in 3 mo. After numerous trips to pediatricians and dermatologist, I finally took it upon myself and contacted a pediatric allergist at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. He was so sympathetic to her skin, and for once I heard that he can have her fixed up in no time, of course, I was skeptical. He said her little immune system is so week from fighting and fighting that we needed to fix her up from the inside out. First things first, an antibiotic to get rid of whatever infection was roaming her little body. For that he prescribed Augmentin taken for 14 days. Then for the itch and antihistamine which he prescribed Zyrtec, for the inflammation and the eczema itself he prescribed an oral cortisone which is called Odapred. Plus an ointment for the bad areas. I started this regimen on the 17 of March 03 right around bedtime. I am not kidding you, she slept throughout that night and woke up with no eczema. It is a complete miracle. I have a brand new two year old. She is not whining she is sleeping through the night. We are not using a jar of Auquaphore every few days. Her skin is soft, still a little rough where she would get it real bad tops of feet and hands, but other than that she is a brand new little girl. I am so thankful to this Doctor beyond words. I cried the next day after beginning the treatment and 2 weeks later I still look at her and it brings tears to my eyes. My advice to mothers whose children have severe eczema take them in and have the blood testing done find out exactly what is causing this break out, the patch testing was inconclusive with Ivy because he skin was so bad, but the blood testing was right on. We all know Eczema can't be cured but it can definitely be controlled. Thanks again for all your support!!! (April 03)
