THE TRUTH ABOUT VACCINES

Reviewed by Samantha Cook
Website Manager

One of the biggest worries we face as parents is the decision to vaccinate our children.  We can only go by what we are told and often have to interpret extremely confliciting advice on the subject.  No sooner have we decided to proceed with immunisations than we are offered the “latest research” which suggests that maybe we should think again.  It is safe to say that no other area of child health poses more uncertainty than the vaccination issue.

The Truth About Vaccines - Making the Right Decision for Your Child, written by Dr Richard Halvorsen, attempts to unravel some of the mystery surrounding vaccinations.  The author has a vast amount of experience in this particular area and is aiming to help parents make an informed decision for their children.  His findings are based on the latest medical research and is an essential read for all parents.

The book is broken down into 25 chapters which cover topics such as Autism and Vaccination, Vaccination Riots, Diptheria, TB, Polio, HIB, Meningitis and a further six chapters devoted to the MMR vaccine.

The book is written in an easy to understand manner which is meant to be accessible to all parents.  Dr Halvorsen has tackled some pretty tricky areas and has discovered that GPs are not always given accurate information about vaccinations but live in fear of being seen to complain or criticise.  He also questions whether health authorities always choose the safest vaccine available or prefer to go for the cheapest option.

This book is a fascinating, if not always comfortable, read and I would certainly suggest that all parents who have an interest in or questions about vaccinations, should read it.  It may help make the right choice.
