Dermasilk Therapeutic Clothing May Be As Effective As Topical Corticosteroids In Treating Eczema In Children

A recent re-evaluation of a comparative clinical paper first published in “Dermatology” in 2006 has suggested that DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing may be as effective as topical corticosteroids when treating outbreaks of atopic eczema in children.

The paper, published by Senti and co-workers (Dermatology 2006; 213:228 to 233) reported on the treatment of 15 children in a “Left/Right” study. Each child was dressed in DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing on one arm and leg and Cotton fabric on the other arm and leg. Both sides were given identical emollient therapy but a potent topical corticosteroid called mometasone was applied daily for 7 days under the cotton clothing but not on the DermaSilk arm & leg.

After 7 days the mometasone was stopped and comparisons were made of the severity of the eczema on either side of the body.

After the first 7 days of active treatment there was no difference in the reduction in EASI scores between the DermaSilk arm and the mometasone arm. DermaSilk EASI score reduced from 3.7 to 0.2 whilst the mometasone dropped from 2.8 to 0.1.

Commenting on the results, Espère Healthcare’s Joint MD, Chris Steeples, said

“This is a very significant point since it demonstrates that the use of DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing had the same effect on one side of a child as a potent steroid had on the other side. Topical steroid usage is often badly managed as parents either under-dose or avoid using steroids altogether because of fears of side effects. The trial highlighted this problem as many parents were unwilling to enter their children into the study because it was going to use a steroid cream. Now there is a clinically documented alternative to topical steroids which could offer equivalent treatment outcomes with no side effects.”

This paper is one of many that have been published to demonstrate the effectiveness of DermaSilk Therapeutic Clothing in the management of eczema. When used in combination with medical creams this medical grade silk based underclothing can now be prescribed by UK doctors and is finding great favour amongst families who use it.
